Subject Matter Jurisdiction

Subject Matter Jurisdiction refers to the authority of the court to hear and decide cases of a particular type or subject matter. It determines whether the court has the power to adjudicate a particular legal dispute based on the nature of the case whether it is a criminal or a civil case.

Under the Subject Matter Jurisdiction, the court has the authority to decide a particular type of case based on the subject matter or the nature of the dispute involved in the case. In the subject matter jurisdiction, it is decided as to the court's power to adjudicate the cases and typically decided by the statutes or the constitution of the particular jurisdiction.

Subject Matter Jurisdiction is needed for the cases to be heard in appropriate Courts. The courts where these cases are heard have expertise and authority. If the case lacks subject matter jurisdiction then the case is dismissed and later heard in the appropriate court.
